The iLEAD Academy is one of 32 schools that will present student projects at the Capitol Rotunda next week. Roger Phelps and Lilly Frye, who serve as president and vice president respectively of the Technology Student Association (TSA), are among the local presenters. They will be joined by seniors Madigan Coulter and Andrew Frye. Both Phelps and Frye have backgrounds in computer science and engineering. Phelps has created a manufacturing prototype using a 3D printer as well as a remote control sphero ball. The prototype was a classroom project utilizing modeling software and design with the theme of a Fourth of July decoration. He made a napkin holder with salt and pepper shakers in the shape of rockets. The remote control sphero ball is programmed from a phone and is about the size of a baseball. Now he has a smaller one that is the size of a golf ball. Phelps built a putt-putt golf course in one of his classes and scaled it down to make a tabletop version to use for demonstrations at a recent career fair at Carroll County Middle School. Frye is using her engineer and computer science skills to design a dress with the Oscar theme of Movie Lovers Unite. Focusing on the “love” portion of the theme, Frye designed a dress that has a heart on the bodice which she intends to create with a 3D printer and she has designed programmable angel wings to go on the back of the dress. Her second project was creating a space themed website for which she wrote all of the code and designed the content, including store merchandise. All of these were year-long projects for the iLEAD students. The seniors will also present their TSA projects, along with their Engineering Design Challenge projects for their senior transition to University of Kentucky engineering, and their experience working this year at NUCOR. The group will also give a presentation at the Kentucky School Boards Association meeting in Louisville next Friday. @iLEAD Academy @CaseyJaynes
