Student looking in mirror at new haircut

A nice haircut makes you feel good, regardless of how old you are.

A few Cartmell Elementary students freshened up their looks yesterday thanks to Tara McArter, owner of Nu Wave beauty shop and her assistant, Angelica Combs. They gave haircuts and added a little color to the kids’ day by painting in blue, green, purple or red at their request.

“It warms my heart,” McCarter said. “The kids appreciate it so much. It’s an honor to do this.”

McArter offers the service free of charge every six to eight weeks at Cartmell and Kathryn Winn Primary. She noted she would like to expand the program to other schools.

Combs is currently attending barber college and McArter is her mentor. Activities like this allow her to get experience and credit toward her education.

One student who was excited to get his haircut said, “when I’m in the car and roll my window down now my hair won’t go in my face!”

The free haircuts are organized through the Family Ties Resource Center.
