Student Making Dough for Dog Treats

Four-legged friends are getting a special treat from a group of Carroll County High School students.

Megan Baldwin’s class makes bags of dog treats that are sold in two local stores. The 10 ounce bags cost $5 each and are sold at Lemon Drop Boutique and Cutting Edge hair salon. The group, known as Panther Paws, is also collecting flat blankets for dogs to be used at the local animal shelter.

Cole Crawford, who is responsible for mixing the dough used to make the treats, said “it’s good because we like to help the dogs.” His class developed the idea and implemented it last year. They have entered the Panther Paws community service project in the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) for the last two years and advanced to state both times. They will present next month in Lexington at the state competition.

“The Panther Paws community service project provides a great opportunity for our students to really showcase their learning and leadership skills gained while being in the classrooms at Carroll County High School,” said Lynn Eaglin, STLP sponsor. “STLP provides our students with an opportunity to create, implement ideas and showcase project-based learning.”

Eleven students create these delicacies for their furry friends. They are: Nate Hoover, Mady Duncan, Hillary Tolliver, Brooklyn Massey, Giotto Cobb, Natalee Sachleben, Jaylinn Perkinson, Quentin Mitchell, Cole Crawford, Larissa Redden and Atyan Garcia.

The group works throughout the school year to make the treats. All money raised selling the treats is returned to the class to continue making the dog treats.

“We’ve made a lot,” Crawford said. Baldwin estimated they’ve made about 1,000 treats.

The ingredients are flour, peanut butter and beef broth, Crawford said. He said they usually make treats on Tuesday and Thursday “when we’re not busy doing school work.” Mixing the dough is his favorite part.

The treats are sold in small, medium and large sizes and can be purchased at the stores or by emailing megan.baldwin@carroll.kyschools.us. Anyone wishing to donate blankets can leave them at the high school’s office.
