Laying Out Quilt Squares

iLEAD Academy students used geometry concepts to create quilt squares for what will be a lasting memento of the Class of 2025.

Geometry teacher Candy Osborne taught a unit on transformations, focusing on reflection, rotation and translation. She incorporated creation of quilt squares into her assessment of the students.

“Over the summer I made a quilt and I thought about how I can embed this into my geometry class,” Osborne said. She tasked her students with creating quilt squares that were within 16 and -16 on the X and Y axis. They had to use the concepts taught in her unit and all shapes had to be geometric.

Macie Miller, Alyssa Horner and Melesa Herzet are three of the Carroll County students who accomplished the task.

Miller said the geometric shapes had to be 36 units square because they will be sewn and have a plan for seam allowance. Horner noted  there is also some overlap of designs and variety so they will fit within the quilt. Herzet said hands-on projects like this make understanding the concepts easier.

The group, along with Osborne, laid out the paper templates to get an idea of how the quilt will look. Osborne said she may have to adjust some colors or squares based on material she has, but the outcome will reflect the squares the students created.

“This reminds me of the students,” she said, noting she can look at the design and style of the squares and see it fits perfectly with the student personality. Each student’s quilt square will have their name on it as well.

Osborne said she will likely have the quilt completed by the end of summer. The quilt will include approximately 38 quilting blocks.
