Students Broadcasting News

A group of high school students who produce a weekly news broadcast were recently treated to a visit to the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) studios in Lexington.

The multimedia publishing class led by CCHS teacher Lynn Eaglin has created a news desk complete with green screens and stage lighting for their production of CCHS Weekly News.

During their KET tour, they observed camera operators, the production booth, the studio sets used in KET programming and other professional aspects of the television studio.

“It was kind of inspirational,” said CCHS senior Angel Snow. “I was amazed how everything worked.” She is one of the camera operators for the high school production and noted seeing the teleprompters and cameras was very interesting.

The students use iPads to produce their broadcast. Snow said she is considering a career in broadcast, but would like to stay behind the camera or become a producer.

Bailey Welch, also a senior in the class, said she learned how to properly “cut” when a scene is complete and learned about recording. Welch said the experience was “cool” but it won’t be her career path - she wants to be an ultrasound technician.

Katie Whitmarsh, a freshman and sports anchor for the CCHS show, said it was “cool to see a professional studio.” Seeing behind the scenes where the preparation and development of a news broadcast and podcasts occurs was interesting to her.

KET provides a contact person for Eaglin regarding equipment, such as tripod and green screens, as well as resources for her class. “I am very thankful for the business partners that support our Media Arts program. I am also thankful for an experience like this that allows the students to see firsthand what it takes to put together a live newscast,” Eaglin said.
