Students cooking food

Fifth graders learned some culinary skills that will equip them for a lifetime of healthy eating and food preparation.

Carroll County Middle School’s fifth graders attended the Recipes for Life program operated by the Carroll County Extension Service. The students were divided into groups and made one of five recipes with the help of four members of the Carroll County homemakers.

The students prepared carrot zucchini muffins, broccoli spoonbread, vegetable platter, banana bread and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

“I think it was really fun and really cool to experience,” said Madelyn Satchwell. Several others near her echoed that sentiment. 

Kaylee Kopecki said her favorite part was cracking the eggs and her least favorite part was cutting the onion, because it squirted juice in her face.

Each student received a cookbook of healthy recipes, an apron, a cutting board, measuring spoons and a measuring cup.

After they finished cooking, students were taught how to set the table and discussed table manners. They all sat together and enjoyed their meal. Each student tasted all of the dishes and the group discussed why they liked or disliked the food.
