Carroll County High School is proactively working to help students who are falling behind. Their most recent effort will be three days during the winter break.
Winter InterSession is offered Dec. 18-20 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for any student who is failing a class, needs more time to complete an assignment/project or complete make-up work.
CCHS is unique in that it uses rolling grades so a student’s grade fluctuates throughout the school year. This results in some students having work from the first nine weeks that has not been completed and it is affecting their overall grade.
“I appreciate the high school team thinking outside the box on how to help our students be successful and improve their learning,” said Carroll County Schools Superintendent Casey Jaynes.
“If we can get some of those students caught up, there’s not as big a hole to fill” when the third nine weeks starts after winter break, said CCHS math teacher Joseph Creager. Mr. Creager has traditionally been involved with this program as well as summer school.
He noted that the third nine weeks, which will begin in January, is the hardest grading period. The content becomes more challenging and it’s a season when many students and staff are absent due to illness or inclement weather.
Therefore, CCHS staff are working to lessen the number of students who start that grading period behind the eight ball. They also recognize several students are struggling a bit this year because of teacher shortages and this is a way to help them catch up.
“We’re mainly targeting kids who are a little behind,” Creager said. “It’s not like summer school where you try to recover all of the credit.”
Creager said there are some students who would not traditionally be in need of this program who could benefit this year. “I think the kids will be receptive,” he said, noting the timing of holiday break is conducive to the three-day Winter InterSession.
