Some members of the senior class at CCHS learned what could be a lifesaving skill - Hands Only CPR.
The program was offered to the senior class by a group in the Project-Based Learning class. They partnered with the American Heart Associationās Kristina Todorich to teach their classmates about the importance of learning two basic things that can help save a personās life.
Hands Only CPR is essentially two steps - Call 911 and start giving chest compressions. The seniors were able to practice the chest compressions on mannequins provided by the American Heart Association.
Calli Hoopengarner, Brooklyn Prince and Alliyah Hall organized the seniors-only event. They will also be selling T-shirts for $10 today to benefit the American Heart Association.
āThis is a good thing to know before we graduate,ā said Calli, who has some experience with CPR when she attended the pre-nursing program at the Carroll County Area Technology Center.
Approximately 25 seniors learned these two steps that could help save someoneās life.
The trio selected the option from offerings given to their class by Kevin States, one of the teachers who works with the PBL students.
PBL is a format that allows students to identify a project or need, create a proposal and present it to administrators for approval. Once itās approved, the team is responsible for identifying what they need to complete their project and see it to fruition.
Alliyah explained that seniors watched a video created by the American Heart Association that explains how to do Hands Only CPR, but the students are not certified in the lifesaving technique.
āWe want people to get the gist of it, like checking their pulse and calling 911,ā Calli said.
