Carroll County Middle School student Bella Lozier wrote an essay that earned her a trip to Camp Webb, which is operated by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Andrew Whittle, conservation educator IV, for KDFW announced the award during one of his recent presentations at CCMS. He has given five assemblies to students on wildlife-related topics this year. The classes included reptiles & amphibians, hunter safety, Raptors - birds of prey, overview of Camp Webb and career options for wildlife biologists. Classes are also given at Christian Academy of Carrollton.
"I'm very excited to go to Camp Webb,” Bella said. “I'm also very grateful that I was chosen for the scholarship. I can't wait to do new things at Camp Webb!" The $225 scholarship was funded through the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which works closely with the state agency.
Bella will attend one week of camp on Grayson Lake in Carter County. Typically about a dozen Carroll County kids attend the camp, which will be held in June.
“It’s an overnight camp where campers get to work on outdoor skills, shoot bows, shoot guns, boat, fish, swim in the lake, hike, and learn outdoor survival skills,” Whittle said. Fish and Wildlife runs three camps across the state so kids from different parts of state get filtered to different camps. Whittle said this allows them to experience different areas of the Commonwealth.
Camp Webb has 160 beds, and Whittle said it’s likely all of those will be full. Students in fourth to sixth grades can register at www.fw.ky.gov.
