Carroll County Schools are offering a summer feed and read program with the help of a grant from the Kentucky Department of Education.
The district is offering breakfast and lunch to any child 18 and younger (age 21 with a disability) to be eaten at a school. The meals will be available Monday through Thursday from June 5-29 at CCMS and Cartmell and May 30-June 8 and June 19-29 at CCHS. Students must be present to receive a meal and must eat the meal on-site. Breakfast is served from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the elementary and middle schools. Breakfast is served from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and lunch from 12-1 pm. at the high school.
Cartmell students were greeted with a Hawaiian theme yesterday, receiving a lei as they entered school and walking the white flowered carpet into the building.
The reading portion of this program is funded through the grant. This is the second year Carroll County’s School Food Service Director, Angela Adkins, has secured the grant.
The Summer Boost will promote family engagement in reading and math by giving away free books and fun items, such as wristbands, bookmarks and magnets, intended to motivate and remind families to read 20 minutes every day.
Students can eat a meal then select a book. After reading the book, they give a summary to an adult in their school and can select another book. The children keep all the books.
“The middle school students really loved it last year when we were giving away the books,” Adkins said. “I had several at Cartmell and the Middle School who told me they didn’t have any books.”
In addition, Adkins said they will have backpacks to give to the students during the lunch period so they will have a way to carry their books.
The program will wrap up on June 29 with guest readers, including local administrators and KDE personnel.
