The Carroll County Board of Education approved the 2024-2025 school year calendar at its meeting tonight.
“Basically, we have a calendar very similar to this year,” explained Director of Pupil Personnel/Chief Operating Officer Mark Willhoite.
Teachers will report to school on Monday, Aug. 12 while students report for their first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Fall Break will be Oct. 7-11, Christmas break will be Dec. 23-Jan. 3 and Spring Break will be April 7-11. The last day of school for students is slated for Wednesday, May 21 with closing day for staff on Thursday, May 22.
Willhoite noted the district had considered some new options, such as digital learning days and extended breaks to include remediation periods, but the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) would not approve those ideas.
The calendar includes 170 instructional days over 1,062 hours.
Carroll County Schools Superintendent Casey Jaynes noted that KDE liked the concept of digital learning days, but maintained the district could not meet its legally required hours of instruction.
Jaynes said the district can apply to be a District of Innovation, but the 20-page application could not be completed quickly enough. He will work on it during the summer and revisit the alternatives for the 2025-2026 school year.
The board was also informed that the current school year will be extended by one day after a snow day was called in January. The last day for students will be May 22 and closing day will be May 23.
