Carroll County Schools will be hiring a new District Health Coordinator following the retirement of Sherry Stamper.
Sherry has served as the school nurse at Cartmell Elementary and the District Health Coordinator for six years. Her accomplishments in those roles are many and the goals she has yet to complete are also many.
The District Health Coordinator would ideally be a person who can work in all schools with all of the nursing staff rather than doing double duty as a school nurse and coordinator, Stamper said. A lot of the duties revolve around organizing policies, working with each school to set established norms for addressing medical issues, giving guidance to nurses and communicating with the community as a whole.
“The District Health Coordinator position is vital to the success of our school district. This position oversees the nurses in the district and is essential to maintaining the health of our students,” said Chief Operations Officer/Director of Pupil Personnel Mark Willhoite.
“We’ve been successful because we have good nurses,” Stamper said. “But, not a day goes by that I don’t get two or three calls” from the other school nurses.
Stamper said the coordinator should be involved in the community and serve as a liaison with them. “The key to all of this is communication,” she said.
As coordinator, she also teaches CPR to all employees. Classes have to be taught throughout the year to accommodate new teachers and bus drivers who are hired. She also played a role in getting more AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) throughout the schools and at all athletic fields. “We’re ahead of the game,” she said, noting Cartmell SRO Laman Stark helped her accomplish this goal.
One primary goal Stamper had, but was unable to achieve, was to begin a Medicaid billing program. She noted the coordinator’s position could be paid for by the revenue generated through this process.
Stamper said the district’s nurses operate as a team and she is pleased with their overall performance.
“It has been a pleasure working with Ms. Stamper over these past few years,” Willhoite added. “Her guidance and feedback during the COVID pandemic was instrumental in our success and re-entry back into the schools.”
