Susan Mills, a mom, author and illustrator, spoke to third grade students at Cartmell Elementary School recently. They read her book ā€œAlex, the Awesome and Artsy Allosaurusā€ together. Alex is a dinosaur who has some anxiety issues. Mills spoke to the children about being anxious and some ways they could calm themselves, including breathing techniques. They also made a pinky promise to talk to someone if they were feeling anxious or needed help. ā€œWe are all different and that is awesome,ā€ Mills said. Cartmell teacher Natalie Abbott is studying for a Master of Library Science degree and learned about a program called School Days. The Kentucky Book Festival and Kentucky Humanities provide the author and books to the schools at no charge. Each child receives a signed copy of the authorā€™s book.

Carroll County Schools celebrated Arbor Day with the planting of two trees, a Southern Magnolia and a Redbud. The City of Carrollton and the Urban Forestry Commission collaborated to host a ceremonial tree planting at Kathryn Winn and the Carroll County Child Development Center. Cathy Gilbert spoke to the students about the Urban Forestry Commission and the City of Carrolltonā€™s designation as a Tree City. They have held that honor for 32 years. ā€œItā€™s a time to appreciate our community and our trees,ā€ Gilbert said. ā€œPlanting a tree is a sign of hope.ā€ Gail Becraft, a retired Carroll County teacher, explained to the Winn students what a magnolia tree will look like and described its beautiful flowers. Both trees can sky to 50 feet tall and both are native to Kentucky. Carrollton Mayor Robb Adams read a proclamation from the city to honor Arbor Day. The trees were donated by the Carroll County Conservation District and Carrollton Utilities. (More photos on the District Facebook page.)
